4th of July Extravaganza

Riverview Park will be the host site for the annual 4th of July Extravaganza on Wednesday, July 4th.  “This event is free to the public, thanks to the City of Miami and the Miami Area Chamber of Commerce,” said Ian Drake, Chamber Executive Director.  The following events will take place during the 4th of July Extravaganza:
A Benefit Poker Run for Abused Children will kick off the 4th of July activities.  The East Rt. 66 Chapter of BACA (Biker’s Against Child Abuse) is hosting the poker run to benefit abused children programs.  Registration for the event will begin at 9 am at Riverview Park with the first bike out at 10:00 am for a 100 mile ride.  The last bike in is at 3:45 pm.  Bikes and cars are accepted means of participation.  The fee to ride is $10 per person.  Participants must be willing to provide proof of insurance and sign a participation waiver.  Poker Run designations will be provided at registration.
Girls ages 2-8 years of age from Miami and surrounding communities will be competing for the title of Lil’ Miss Firecracker 2012.  The contest is hosted by the Oklahoma Business Women & Miami High Noon Business Women.  All proceeds raised will be utilized in a scholarship program for local non-traditional women attending college.  Participating contestants will be judged on most money raised, in any manner.  Participants will also be a part of the presentation at the 4th of July Extravaganza at 5:00 pm on the stage in Riverview Park.   The top three contestants will receive prize packages and the 1st Place winner will be awarded the Lil’ Miss Firecracker crown.
The Annual Pizza Hut Turtle Derby will take place at 5:30 pm in Riverview Park near the rock pavilion.  This event, hosted by Pizza Hut for the past 25 years, will begin registration at 5:00 pm.  Participants should bring an unpainted/unmarked box turtle to compete for great prizes.  Please note that only box turtles will be allowed in the derby.
Sonic will host the annual Hot Dog Eating Contest.  Each year the competition heats up and grows in number of participants.  Registration for the contest begins near the rock pavilion at 5:45 pm followed by the contest at 6:30 pm.
Another food event will take center stage at 7 pm when a large crowd gathers around the High-Fahlutin Hillbilly Pie Eatin’ near the stage.  The First Assembly of God Church began this fun event two years ago and will be hosting once again.  Registration for the event will begin at 6 pm.
To help keep people cool, Opposing Lines and other water activities will be hosted by the Miami Fire Department.  Look for the hoses behind the rock pavilion.
Bring your appetite and enjoy the great concessions that will be available.  The Lions Club will provide items such as hamburgers, hot dogs and BBQ sandwiches.   Happy Foods Concessions will serve everyone’s favorite funnel cakes, string fried taters and fried green beans.  And to cool things down Cuzzin Vinny’s Italian Ice will have 14 flavors of Italian ice and other ice cream treats.  Check out each vendor’s complete menu to know what is available.
The evening will not be complete without some great music.  Local band Bad Knees Rising will entertain the crowd again this year. They will take the stage at 7pm, and KGLC/KVIS will be playing patriotic music throughout the evening and during the fireworks presentation.
The festivities will conclude when the sky explodes with color and noise during the fireworks display courtesy of the City of Miami.  The fireworks show will start at approximately 9:25 pm.
People are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets into the event. No alcohol or fireworks are allowed in the park.  “Safety and security is paramount with an event such as the 4th of July Extravaganza,” said Police Chief George Haralson.  “We ask everyone to adhere to the city ordinance that prohibits the discharge of fireworks within the city limits, or they will be subject to a fine of up to $500.  It is important that we ensure the safety of our volunteers dealing with the fireworks and spectators within the park.”
