A 1920 Model F40 Mitchell Touring Car with ties to the Frank Phillips Home was recently donated to the museum and is now on display.
A few years after rolling off the assembly line in Rancine, Wisconsin, the 1920 Model F40 Mitchell Touring Car was shipped to Bartlesville. Clayton Fisher, the official chauffeur for Frank Phillips, brought the Mitchell to the garage of the Frank Phillips Home so that a cracked block could be repaired. This beautiful touring car basically stayed there for many years, eventually being purchased by Henry Irwin who was married to Frank and Jane’s granddaughter.
For years, the car was shuttled from garage to storage building to another garage, but it very rarely hit the road. In 1998, something very special happened. The car was purchased by a local couple, Josh and Edna Lee. At that time, the car was 78 years old and had only 372 miles on it! The Lee’s gave the car the tender care that it deserved, replacing the radiator, properly repairing the cracked block and putting new tires on it. For the next 20 years, the Lee’s toured the car to car shows in Oklahoma and Missouri and finally to the Salisbury Automobile Classic Car Show in Des Moines, Iowa, where the Mitchell won first place.
Today, 100 years after it rolled off the factory floor, the Mitchell returns to the garage at the Frank Phillips Home, thanks to the incredible contribution by Edna Lee, in memory of her late husband Josh. The Frank Phillips Home is proud to welcome it back and it is now on display in bay three of the museum.
The Frank Phillips Home is located at 1107 Cherokee Avenue in Bartlesville. The historic home and museum are open for tours Wednesday through Saturday. Admission can be purchased in advance at www.frankphillipshome.org or in the museum gift shop located directly behind the home. More information can also be found on the Frank Phillips Home Facebook page.
